The World Championships in Aare have started as we all know!
The past days have been very exciting and this is just the beginning! The first competitions already took place and the athletes are focused on their trainings: this is where our team took action. Filming the athletes on the slopes allows the coaches to have an in-depth analysis of their skiers’ performance. Doing this required careful preparation to find the correct equipment specifications and the optimal spot to film from. The feedback from the coaches was very positive, since the videos highlighted the weaknesses and strengths of their athletes, showing them how to perform at their best. This was also a lot of fun for our team, since we used snowmobiles to reach the desired place for the video shooting, driving at high speed up on the mountains!

Smart patches tested by national ski teams

In the near future the Swedish cross-country and alpine ski teams will be testing a new kind of smart patch. Mid Sweden University is part of a new European research project designed to develop smart patches that can be used to improve health and athletic performance.

– These devices resemble today’s technical monitoring aids that are strapped to the body (e.g., by a wristband or a band around the chest). However, they should not be seen as a replacement for today’s activity bracelet, but rather as a complement. With this technology, we should be able to make measurements in connection with normal exercise outdoors that can only be tested in physiological laboratories today, says Hans-Christer Holmberg.

SINTEC (Soft Intelligence Epidermal Communication Platform) is a Horizon 2020 project that was started in January of 2019. The project is for four years with a budget of 4 million Euros. Researchers at Technical Sciences at Uppsala University will coordinate this project, the other partners being the Swedish Winter Sports Research Centre at Mid Sweden University and the LINKS Research Institute in Italy, as well as the companies Mycronic AB in Sweden, ST Microelectronics and Warrant Hub in Italy, Evalan in the Netherlands and MySphera in Spain.

– This highly interesting European project is fully in line with Mid Sweden University’s ambition to broaden the scope of its research on sports and health, says Anders Fällström, University Vice Chancellor.

Smart patches are constructed of soft, stretchable circuit boards on which small groups of common electronic components are mounted in soft rubber and connected to one another by fluid tracks of conducting metal alloys. The researchers plan to demonstrate smart patches to the Swedish cross-country and alpine ski teams in hopes that these can help improve their performance, and at the same time, reduce their risk of injury.

– Data on bodily functions can be transferred safely and rapidly in a streamlined fashion to a smartphone through the fat tissue in the body, instead of sending signals through wires or through the air. This reduces the power required and prevents the information from being read without direct contact with the person’s skin, Klas Hjort explains. The effectiveness of your skiing style can already be measured, but more data that relates movement, body strain and effort to skiing speed should allow even greater improvement, he says.

Patients with heart problems or recovering from a bone fracture or surgery constitute an additional target group. Moreover, these smart patches should provide comfort in our ageing society, helping individuals to cope with slow deterioration of their health, such as in the heart, balance or muscular strength.

Chasing world records? Yes, that is how we roll…:-)
Well, at least, we are part of supporting it…Christian is aiming at breaking the speed word record on one leg (210 km/h). He is an amazing athlete!

Professor Matej Super and performance engineer Alessandro Galloppini have been working in Sweden and Italy since 2017 with the company Future Eyewear, to create a new “faster” helmet that is still comfortable and safe.

Alessandro explains the final test:
The appropriate wind tunnel was chosen according to the test specifications (maximum wind speed, air flow laminarity) and Newton Lab, Milan, Italy was selected since it satisfied all the requirements.

The tests allowed us to assess the resistance that a body opposes to the air flow and analyze any turbulence effect that could occur, at different wind speeds. The measurements were performed both with a human skier and with a sensorized dummy’s head, which provided additional information about the pressure distribution caused by the air flow on the helmets and the acoustic noise due to the wind.
20180911_160921
(Photo: Internet of Sports)
Moreover, qualitative analyses were performed using smoke and tufts to provide information about the flow around the helmets and evaluate the presence of laminar or turbulent conditions. To compare the measurements with visual information, all the tests were also recorded with videocameras.
The data collected were analyzed to compare the performance of different helmets, establish which model had the best aerodynamical features and suggest possible improvements on the currently available products. From this collaboration between our project and Future Eyewear a new specification for an hopefully outstanding helmet has been created.

I got to spend the last two days in Budapest at the 5th Annual Sportdata and Performance Forum. It was super interesting to hear how different discplines are utilzing technology and data to improve performance, player safety and tesm dynamics.
And what do I think of the future myself?
With the growing availability of data it will be critical to find the right balance between using data to guide decisions but not taking it as the only solution. Data without context can seem to be telling us one thing but when viewed with all other variables taken into account may lead to a very different outcome.
In the future big data in sports will allow us to develop equipment to improve safety and performance for athletes off all levels, make individualized decision about training and competition to harness every athletes maximum potention, and find ways to improve global health through accessible and accurate monitoring and motivation methods.
We might find new ground breaking crossovers if we use data the right way.

181123 Shaping of future sports by AI power!

Sometimes you need to reflect, and I guess I just did some of that.
Development around us is racing, and sometimes I feel I am actually at its core….and sometimes not.
Take for instance Artificial Intelligence. Only 5-6 years ago it was rare in sports, and now it is everywhere in shape of machine vision from chatbots and wearable tech to computer vision and more – this is running the show in so many sports today. It is proven that arenas and sports clubs that provide more personalized digital experiences to the audience, such as an app will increase both fan base and revenues.

Tech Emergence online writes about the first AI-powered wearable developed by a french start-up, PIQ and Everlast last year:
The “first AI-powered wearable for combat sports.” Crafted using GAIA Intelligence, (machine learning platform for sports analytics) the startup claims that the platform is capable of tracking and analyzing “microscopic variations in boxing movements” to help maximize the efficiency of workouts and training.
The data that are recorded can also be accessed through a phone app which allows users to track their activity and see how they compare to other users based on a leaderboard.

So what cool stuff can we expect in the future?
Some innovations will become the news of the past as new things develops around them – but some innovations will become trends, and later on part of new strategies that shapes the world.
It is a good bet to think that AI coaches will become normal in the future, as demand is a factor in this development. I also believe, but this is my personal stand point, that anything that has a strong demand will increase speed and push development so much harder in the future than today (and it is pushed already!). It is important to create strategies and tools to be able to stay on top of this fast race as every hype has a crowd that just tags along and lose control in the end.
I see AI changing the sports drastically – but for the better. AI is growing into a creative intuitive smart machine that can improve sports from many angles.

I cant wait for my own personal coach, advising me, making conclusions, looking amazingly hot for being…..AI 🙂

Artificiell Intelligence is taking over! Check out the AI picture that I made of Stockholm!
And yes – we got a new case coming up with AI and Machine Learning, I will get back to this when we have started, very exciting and not as complicated as it sounds.

I just got back form the TechDays conference in Stockholm – it exceeded my expectations! We have talked about artificial intelligence and all the tools that Microsoft is creating with this technology. AI is used in several applications: from image processing to speech recognition, from data mining to strategic planning, but the list is much longer. Our project will of course use it within sports technology.

The speakers at the conference showed us some of the most unusual tools that make use of AI: a software that classifies the quality of for example wine, based on different parameters (pH, sulphurs, alcohol content, etc), an app that helps you recognizing mushroom species with your phone, a software that estimates your age and happiness level based on your face, etc.

Seeing so many applications makes you understand that AI will really have a huge impact on every aspect of our life in the next years.

If you want to make art with AI, click this link: https://deepart.io/. I have already created my image showing a view of Stockholm!

Artificial intelligence everywhere!
I am spending some days in Stockholm to attend a huge event organized by Microsoft (the picture should give you an idea of the number of people that are here!): TechDays.
Several experts from the American colossus are going to present the latest and most innovative technologies that Microsoft has developed and how scientists can make use of them.
We will talk about virtual reality, IoT, cybersecurity and much more, but what brought me here is a particular topic: artificial intelligence. This can be many things from talking robots to having data perform is certain ways – sounds strange? Complicated? Seen any talking robots around that can actually think for themselves?

Well, AI will be used in our project!

Yesterday I attended a pre-conference activity, where artificial intelligence was used to create a chat that can interact with users from a website or an app!
I am looking forward to hear more in the next days, and I will come back with more!

Today former goldmedalist and Swedish Champion in 400 m hurdles, Fredrik Lindberg, visited our team in Aare for starting up our case for track and field. This case will eventually include apps and gamification, and aims at being a tool for both arenas and athletes as well as families – with completely new functions! This means that families within the municipality of Oestersund will have a new experience, easy access and maybe start to exercise themselves – the goal is to scale up national and more.
